A man of two worlds: Classical and Jazz Influences in Nikolai Kapustin's Twenty-four Preludes Op. 53
Since Steven Osborne and Marc-Andre Hamelin recorded their Kapustin CDs around 2000, the music of Nikolai Kapustin has been catching on in the west. The articles generated by these recordings have astute commentary, though no scholarly articles have yet appeared in western publications. My paper seeks to corroborate the claims of many critics that Kapustin's work is a unique blend of classical and jazz influences and I do this by explicitly showing how he uses elements of classical form along with jazz stylistic techniques in his music.
